Simon is harassing Ryan about his voice again.
Randy was a member of Journey, really?
The judges have a police escort to the auditions.
A dude who compares himself to Justin Guarini is up first. Simon and Randy are sitting at different ends of the panel than they usually do. What’s up with that? Must be trying to spice things up a bit. Joshua Ulloa is said contestant singing Marvin Gaye’s “Lets Get It On.” He did sound effects and everything. Simon says it was good in parts- similar to Inspector Gadget. Randy thought it was entertaining. He gets 4 yeses.
Sharon Wilbur brought her dog, Sasha, to the auditions because the dog helps her relax. Simon holds the dog on his lap. She sings “Superstar” by Karen Carpenter. The female judges tell her Sasha was yawning during the performance. Simon says yes as does Randy. It’s up to the girls. Kara extends her arms toward Paula’s face and Paula went in for the kiss, keeping her mouth covered by her hand. Kara says her job isn’t done until Simon tries something on her. Sharon is through to Hollywood.
Ran is driving around in a golf cart acting lost.
Dana Moreno is next to audition. She is screeching and her outfit is ridiculous- a pink mini dress and a black top hat. Simon says she can’t sing big songs. She responds saying she’ll take as much direction as they want. Simon says he wants her to go in the direction of the exit. It’s clearly a no.
Next we have a confident Kaneswa Finnie singing an Anita Baker song. She tries snapping her fingers to help with the performance. It didn’t help. Simon says it got progressively worse and her voice is terrible. She says she’s not surprised with the comments since they came from Simon. The judges ask her mom to come in as her supporter. It’s a no.
Julissa Veloz wants to be the first Latina Idol. She sings a Whitney Houston song. Simon says it was better than he expected, but she didn’t make the song sound nice. Her laugh bothers him. Kara says it kept her on the edge of her seat. Paula feels left out now that there are 4 judges and walks off. Julissa follows her giving Paula words of encouragement. Paula returns to giver her a yes. She gets yeses from the other 3 judges.
Darin Darnell is a social butterfly at the auditions and very happy. However, his spirits are crushed when his friend doesn’t advance to Hollywood. He tears up in front of the judges before he even starts singing. Darin sings “Yesterday” by Boyz II Men. It’s a no from me. Simon says it isn’t working and the voice isn’t there. Kara asks why he’s upset. He says it’s so much- it’s everything. Kara says the music business is full of pain and heartache and if he can’t take it in the audition room then the judges are are doing him a huge favor. It’s a no.
Naomi Sykes is the last contestant of Day 1. She compares herself to Mariah Carey cause she can sing very high notes. Her friend, Samantha, is dying to meet Randy so she comes into the audition room. Simon asks her to sit on Randy’s lap through the audition. Paula then sits on Simon’s lap and Ryan comes in to sit on Kara’s lap. Naomi is singing “Lovin’ You” by Minnie Riperton. Naomi can’t sing at all. The judges join her in the la la la’s in the song. Naomi starts crying when she realizes it’s a no and Kara hugs her. Randy and Paula join in the group hug.
When asked how the first day of auditions went, Simon says they weren’t very good.
Jasmine Murray is the first contestant of Day 2. Her mom had severe toxemia during her pregnancy with her. She sings “Big Girls Don’t Cry” by Fergie. Simon and Randy are back in their respective spots now on the judges panel. Simon says she’s cute and a very good singer. She gets 4 yeses.
George Ramirez is studying physics and desperately needs to shave. He has an insanely long thick beard for an 18 year old. Simon asks him where he sees himself in 11 years. He says he’d have a simple house with marble floors. He’s monotone and extremely quiet when he sings. George says he’s never sang in public. Randy says it was the quietest audition he’d ever heard. It’s a no.
Anne Marie Boskovich is next exclaiming Kara is her hero. She sings a few phrases from a song Kara sung in Nashville that touched her. Simon says he has a problem with her. Randy says she’s a natural talent, but doesn’t see herself as a star. Simon asks her to come back as a different person. She leaves the audition, but claims to return.
T.K. Hash auditioned for Season 7 and is back to audition singing “Imagine” by John Lennon. Great voice. Not my favorite song. Paula says he has a very good voice and sounds better than last year. Randy says he got better but that it was over the top. Simon says no, but the remaining 3 judges say yes.
Michael Perrelli takes his guitar everywhere and can’t imagine not being a musician for the rest of his life. He is terrified when he learns he’s not able to audition with his guitar. He’s crying and freaking out in his interview before the audition. Just a hunch- this isn’t gonna go in his favor. He sings “Jumper” by Third Eye Blind. Simon says he’s interesting, but his voice isn’t. Kara thinks he would be better with his guitar. Simon tells him not to plead, to get a job, and get a band together. Simon gets irritated with his pleading and asks him to leave. It’s a no. Michael is so upset he was rejected he tells his mom not to touch him when she tries to comfort him. Hey man, don’t take it out on your mom.
Anne Marie is back. She changed shoes, got her make up done by a make-up artist who just happened to be out in the street (yeah, right) and took off her jean jacket. She sings “Bubbly” by Colbie Calliet. I love it so do the judges. She’s through to Hollywood.
Only 16 tickets to Hollywood were given out. Are they getting more stingy or are there not that many talented people auditioning anymore? It seems like more tickets were given out in previous seasons.
