Ryan’s not introduced by the anonymous announcer tonight. Tonight’s theme is songs from the year the contestants were born. Ryan’s also introducing the judges. Wait, is it only results night they are introduced by the announcer?
We see the judges and Ryan’s baby pictures. Ahhh, cute!
Danny Gokey is the oldest so he’s kicking off the show. Oh yeah, he’s from Wisconsin. Represent the Midwest, baby! He was born in 1980 and sings “Stand By Me”. I like his glasses tonight. Randy didn’t love the arrangement, but Danny’s an amazing singer and made him love it anyway. He’s got some talent. Kara, too, was wondering about the arrangement, but at the end she says Danny killed it. He made it his own and did it well. Paula says he set the bar really high for the other contestants tonight. She liked the arrangement and thought the performance was very amazing. Simon thought the beginning was good, the middle was lazy, and the end was terrific. Overall, he called it great.
Kris and Lil are next. Apparantly they aren’t going from oldest to youngest cause Adam’s the next oldest.
Kris Allen. He tells Ryan the contestants had their first day off in 2 months. He went to the beach and rode the Ferris wheel. When getting off, the Ferris wheel conductor asked him if he was “that guy” from AI. He said yes and the guy asked Kris if he would tell Adam hi. Nice. Rude. He was born in 1985. Wow, young kids on the show these days! He wanted to be a taxi driver as a kid. LOL! He sings “All She Wants To Do Is Dance”. He’s playing guitar tonight and is in the crowd through the whole performance. Good, solid vocals. Not a big fan of the thin mustache he’s growing. Kara’s a big fan and was excited he picked an uptempo song, but thinks it lost its youth with the jazzy feel. Paula says he’s one of the most likable contestants ever. Simon says yes, he’s likable, but it was indulgent, boring, forgettable. Someone from the crowd yells, “Kris you’re hot.” Simon adds well so am I. Hahaha. Simon was disappointed because Kris came over as a guitarist wanting to be a singer rather than vice versa. He went on to call it a stupid, stupid song choice. Randy agrees with Simon. The arrangement was a little self-indulgent. Randy was listening more to the band than Kris. He lost Kris in the song.
Lil Rounds- 1984. Her name is from her grandma, Lily. She is singing “What’s Love Got To Do With It” by Tina Turner. I’m totally disappointed she didn’t do the big 1980’s Tina Turner hair. Her performance was kinda copy cat. Paula says she looks hot. She thought it was important for Lil to take liberties with the song and prove to the judges that she knows who she is an artist. She’s a brilliant vocalist, but Paula warns that will only get her so far. Paula says she needed to have created her own niche. Simon says we’re not looking for a 2nd or 3rd rate Tina Turner cause that’s what it was. It was a ghastly copy cat performance. He has no idea who she is. She needs to start becoming original. Randy says they all love her and she has mad talent, but it doesn’t seem like she’s listening to the judges. Kara says it’s about making the leap from a singer to an artist and knowing yourself. That’s where Lil’s struggling.
Anoop Desai. 1986. Oh he was born on my wedding date! He sings “True Colors” Oh, I like this song. He picks it up at the chorus and it sounds much better. Randy said he pulled it back after last week and it was a very nice vocal. Kara says he controlled the song and didn’t let it control him. Paula said he choice of song was flawless. His voice was magical and he showed his true colors. Simon says he’s like a singing yo-yo. It was fantastic.
Scott MacIntyre. 1985. He wanted to a train engineer as a child. He sings “The Search Is Over”. No piano this week for him. Instead, he’s playing the electric guitar. Kara commends him for playing the guitar and taking on a power song. There were good and bad moments. She thinks some parts were overambitious for him. Paula gives him credit for stepping away from his comfort zone. He has a wonderful sense of humor. She thinks reaching for the high notes came off a little screeching. Overall bravo. Simon suggests he goes back to the piano. The song was horrible. The guitar playing wasn’t much better. Randy said it was just okay. It didn’t show him as a star. Scott says at least he’s versatile.
Allison Iraheta. 1992. She sings “I Can’t Make You Love Me”. Awesome. I loved it. Paula rambles on and loved the tenderness she added and how she made it her own. Simon thought it was very good, but she needs to be more likable. He doesn’t think her personality is shown very much. Randy says Allison reminds him of Kelly Clarkson. She can sing her face off. One of the best tonight! Kara says she took adult content and made it young. She adds “Lets Go Make A Record”.
Matt Giraud. 1985- “Part Time Lover”. He’s more Justin Timberlake tonight and I like it. The judges are rushed cause they’re running late again so they only say one-liners. Randy says vocally it was one of the best tonight. Kara says it was incredible on every level. Paula says two words “standing o”. Simon says it was a million times better than last week. Well done.
Adam Lambert. 1982. Oh yay! My birth year. He sings “My World”. This is totally the type of style I could see him doing and for the first time I’m compelled to vote for him. Simon says the bad news is they’re running out of time. The good news is he’s the only one who’s gonna talk and words are unnecessary. He gives him a standing ovation. WOW!
How I voted:
Adam- 5 votes
Allison- 4 votes
Matt- 4 votes
Danny- 3 votes
Kris- 2 votes (tonight wasn’t his best, but I like him)
I predict Lil, Scott, and Kris for the bottom 3.
